A Pyramid of Leadership Success in Nursing Becoming a good leader takes a special type of person. People who want to become a good leader not only have to have the will to take on the job, but they need to have certain traits and qualities that are characteristic of a good leader. The trait theory of leadership supports the claim that some people are endowed with certain characteristics that make them more capable of being a good leader than others. Many leaders and researchers have come up with certain traits that make people great leaders, whether it is being a leader in a business, an organization or a leader of a sports team. Trait Theory of Leadership The leadership traits that are involved in this theory can be defined as relatively coherent and integrated patterns of personal characteristics, reflecting a range of individual differences, that foster consistent leadership effectiveness across a variety of group and organizational situations (Zaccaro, 2007). These can be further described as qualities that differentiate leaders from non-leaders and include not only personality attributes but also motives, values, cognitive abilities, social and problem-solving skills, and expertise (Zaccaro, 2007).
